Glazed Spiral Ham

As a child, I was always a Daddy’s Girl. My poor dad could hardly get a break to even go to the bathroom; it’s true! I went with him everywhere. I loved to watch him cook, too! I can remember standing in the kitchen at different ages watching my father make this ham every Easter! He’d liberally rub the mixture onto the ham and stick cloves all over it. It was a nice thing to watch and it looked so pretty when he was finished; it tasted even better! I really appreciated his efforts after I started making this for my family. Those cloves add a lot of flavor, and if not for this reason, I would omit them entirely—they always hurt my fingers; they’re a bit sharp! I admit that I have cheated a time or two by putting ground cloves in the mixture.

1 Spiral ham
1 box dark brown sugar
½ c. yellow mustard (my Dad alwasy used yellow mustard, but you can use wholegrain as well)
1/2 tsp. freshly ground nutmeg
1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp. Slap Ya Mama or your favorite Creole spice
Whole cloves
1 (2 liter) bottle Ginger ale

Place ham in a roasting pan. Pour a little ginger ale in the bottom of your roasting pan. Combine dark brown sugar, mustard, nutmeg, and just enough ginger ale to wet the mixture. Using a knife make slits in the ham one way and then the other so you end up with pretty diamonds. Rub the glaze all over your ham and press one clove into each diamond. Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 1 hour and 40 minutes or until heated through, soft and tender. Enjoy!

My mom always served this up with Mashed Potatoes and Carrots! She’d cook them both and then mash them together-delicious and very pretty!
